Reading legends Brian McDermott and Glen Little were among the near 2,500 crowd as Sunderland Under-21s edged the Royals in a seven-goal thriller to book their place in the PL2 play-off final.
Managed by iconic former captain Graeme Murty, the Black Cats booked their spot against Tottenham in the final with a 99th-minute equaliser and 120th-minute winner after coming from behind.
Full-back Ellis Taylor grabbed a hattrick while Trey Ogunsuyi struck in stoppage time of extra-time to down the Royals.
Jayden Wareham, Adrian Akande and Matty Carson netted for Reading, who fell down to 10 men in stoppage time following Jacob Borgnis' second yellow card.
On a warm evening at the SCL Stadium, 2,374 supporters backed the Young Royals, with a decent proportion backing the Black Cats.
McDermott, who took the Royals to the Premier League in 2012, was in a private box with the likes of current manager Ruben Selles, coach James Oliver-Pearce and recruitment chief, Brian Carey.
Harvey Knibbs and Ben Elliott were among the first-team squad also at the ground supporting the youngsters.
