A memorial bench has been installed in Calcot to honour Reading Football Club's first black player, Andy Alleyne.
Alleyne made his debut for Reading on October 21, 1972, marking it with an amazing 50m equaliser from a free kick against the then Division Four leaders, Southport.
Making over 50 appearances for the club and featuring for local non-league sides, Alleyne settled in the area and continued to live in the town until tragically losing his battle with cancer in 2012 aged 61.
The bench was originally commissioned to mark the 50th anniversary of his debut and is now fully up in Linear Park; just behind Corsham Road, Calcot.
This is where Andy and his family lived from when his house was built until his death, with his family still having a home on the road.
On Sunday, June 24, the Parish Council and Andy's family will be holding an informal “opening ceremony" for the bench, in the eastern part of the Calcot Linear Park (https://w3w.co/bunk.lately.races – rough location).
The council's chairman, Cllr Claire Tull, will formally cut the ribbon around 11:30am.
Ron Grant, the Club's long-serving kit manager, will be there as will The Supporters' Trust (STAR).
