Reading legend Brian McDermott has labelled rumours surrounding the future of the women's team 'an absolute disgrace.'

The 61-year-old spent over a decade working with the Royals, famously leading the club to the Championship title in 2012 as manager.

Departing most recently in 2016, the former Arsenal forward was Director of Football at Scottish Premiership outfit Hibernian until his exit last week.

In the headlines for the past 12 months, as an ownership saga rages into its second year, reports suggested that the women's team could become extinct due to funding issues.

A club renowned for punching above its weight, a WSL stalwart for almost a decade, the news sent shockwaves around the club.

Former manager and captain, Kelly Cousins, described it as 'heartbreaking' and has urged the club staff to 'not let this happen.'

Speaking exclusively to the Reading Chronicle, McDermott echoed Cousins' thoughts.

"That’s an absolute disgrace," he stated. "Reading were always really fabulous- I can remember all the success they had and I find it incredible. The women are playing for OUR club- it is just wrong on so many levels."

Another aspect of the club that some have questioned is the Academy, with the Royals proud of their Category One status.

Some have suggested a drop-down to save some costs, something supporters and McDermott alike firmly disagree with.

"It has been the bedrock of what Eamonn [Dolan] did in the past and what Gilksey is doing and what Noel [Hunt] and Ledge [Leigertwood] are doing," McDermott added.

"My team that went up must have had half a dozen Academy players involved, which is incredible. Hopefully, something happens- A new owner comes in with a vision for the ladies’ team and Academy as it is. I believe if you can get the situation right, the club is ready to go."

The club are yet to comment but the Supporters' Trust at Reading [STAR] said: "STAR acknowledge the recent articles by The Guardian and Sky Sports concerning Reading Women. We are actively engaging with the Club to establish the facts. Despite the significant challenges and setbacks faced in the past year, we remain committed to supporting Reading FC Women.

"We are determined to champion to new owners the importance of rebuilding Reading FC Women and working towards restoring the progress achieved over the last decade."
