Reading opened their EFL Trophy account for the 2024/25 campaign with a 3-1 victory over West Ham United Under-21s.

Take a look at our ratings below.

Coniah Boyce-Clarke, 6: Was beaten at his near-post but the ball did take a wicked deflection so was not a great deal the youngster could have done. Was tested little but handled what he needed to do well.

Kelvin Abrefa, 7: Good showing from the youngster who looks set for plenty of League One action this year. Showed great strength and was obviously at a higher level than the Under-21 opponents. Took his goal really well too.

Abraham Kanu, 6: After a difficult time against Colchester United last week, the teenager would have been desperate to put it behind him and impress. Looked strong and handled the forwards well. A good response to a setback in Essex.

Harlee Dean, 6: Showed a good range of passing and was unbeatable in the air. His deflection helped the Hammers beat Boyce-Clarke in the first half but it was a tackle he needed to make.

Andre Garcia, 7: Looked experienced beyond his 16 years, comfortably playing at a higher standard than the opposition. Glided up and down the wing.

Charlie Savage, 7: Another strong showing from the Wales international, who is really stepping up so far this season. Always looked for the ball and wanted to progress it forward. Full of energy and evidently has confidence coursing through his veins.

Shay Spencer, 7: A Royals debut after a serious injury and the teenager looked like he had run the midfield for years. Confident and composed throughout, it could be an exciting season for the teenager.

Ben Elliott, 7: Similar to Savage, Elliott has clearly worked hard over the summer and come back almost unrecognisable to the one that featured last season. Looked like a man playing in a kid's match against the Hammers, running the show from midfield.

Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan, 7: Simply unplayable out wide, beating his opposite number at will. The final ball was lacking on the night, but ran the defence ragged.

Jayden Wareham, 7: A handful from minute one to the very end, he took his goal with great confidence and thoroughly deserved it. Hopefully, many more to come.

Adrian Akande, 6: Still very raw and had a chance to create a goal in the first half but end product was lacking. Only his second appearance and will get plenty of chances this season.

Substitutes

Tivonge Rushesha, 7: A good cameo from the Zimbabwe international, loving nothing more than picking up the ball deep and driving with it.

Tyler Sackey, 7: Took his goal expertly and made a positive impact on his home debut. Plenty to come from the teenager.

Ashqar Ahmed, 6: Another debut and another strong impact off the bench. The Academy continues to be the lifeblood of the club.

Michael Craig, 6: Did exactly what he needed to do for the final 25 minutes, won the ball and kept it.

Emmanuel Osho, 6: More minutes in the tank for a promising youngster.
