Reading lost their first League One fixture of the season, going down 3-0 at newly promoted Wrexham.

Ollie Palmer, Elliott Lee and Andy Cannon found the net in North Wales during an efficient and impressive performance from Royals legend Phil Parkinson's side.

20-year-old Adrian Akande was the only change from Saturday's 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic, replacing Mamadi Camara in what was a squad thin on the ground.

Wrexham came out the blocks fast, having a shot within 30 seconds despite not starting with possession. Cannon fizzed an effort over the bar after the ball dropped to the edge of the box.

It took 14 minutes for Reading to have their first effort, despite playing some good football. Charlie Savage, back on the patch where he made his Wales bow, saw his shot blocked at source following a clever passage of play.

It took 23 minutes for the deadlock to be broken, coming after a period of home pressure. Jeriel Dorsett, targeted throughout, failed to stop the cross from the left and Palmer rose highest to head past Joel Pereria.

The Dragons nearly doubled their led within four minutes, countering incisively from Amadou Mbengue’s long throw and Jack Marriott forced Pereira to tip an effort behind for a corner.

Wrexham did add a second shortly after, however, and again made the most of space on the left. Winning the ball deep but cutting through the Royals like a hot knife through butter, James McClean’s header hit the post, but Lee was on hand to bundle the ball over the line. Winning a free kick within seconds of the restart, Tyler Bindon came close for Reading as his header clipped off the crossbar.

Any hope of a comeback had dissipated inside three minutes of the restart as the hosts picked up the ball on the edge of Reading’s box and Cannon fired a low, powerful drive past Pereria to add to Wrexham’s dominance.

Similar to the first half, the Royals threatened in spells but were unable to test Arthur Okonkwo between the sticks. Lee could have grabbed himself a brace on the hour mark, seeing a free kick tipped away, and Bindon had to be alert on the goal line to prevent Steven Fletcher from getting in on the act off the bench.

Tivonge Rushesha thought he had pulled one back late on, only for his effort to crash off the bar and away.

Ruben Selles rung the changes in the final period and the hosts cruised to yet another home win- no side has picked up more home points since last season than the Red Dragons.

For the Royals, it marks a first goalless game since January and ends the unbeaten start. Charlton Athletic visit the SCL Stadium next weekend to continue what is a difficult start to the new campaign.
