Former Reading favourite Nelson Abbey has confirmed a season-long loan move to Swansea City- but remained an unused substitute for Sunday's South Wales derby against Cardiff City.

The Woodley-born Academy graduate enjoyed a breakout season for the Royals in League One, one of the better performers during a tough first half to the season and was even captain numerous times under Ruben Selles.

Sold in January to Olympiacos, he managed 31 appearances for his boyhood club and just four for the Greek giants in the second half of the season, returning to watch Reading on occasion.

Sealing a switch to the Swansea.com Stadium on Friday, the defender was included in the matchday squad for Sunday's 1-1 draw against arch-rivals Cardiff, but remained on the bench.

“I’m excited to finally get it done. It took a while for everything to get finalised, but I’m looking forward to starting," Abbey said upon arrival in Wales.

“I first heard there was interest around two weeks ago. I wasn’t so sure on what I wanted to do, but when my agent told me what’s happening, and I spoke to the head coach, that’s when things got a bit more serious.

“The first time I spoke to him was on a Zoom call. He was very honest, and very open with me. He told me about the style of play, how things are here and how life is here.

“It wasn’t just about football, but he was talking to me about other things. We had good conversations for sure."
