Reading Rugby Club welcomed in the start of a new season with its Community Day.
New Chair John Kelly, ably assisted by Berkshire Brigands social committee, organised stalls from across the club having a variety of money-making ventures with representation from the Mini, Junior, Senior Women (Kites), Social Members, Walking Rugby and Mixed Ability (Brigands) sections all contributing to a festive atmosphere.
Bookending the 1st XV match against Buckingham, a good match won by Reading, were demonstration games by Walking Rugby and the Brigands which highlighted the fun and enjoyment for the participants of these two relatively new forms of the game. Away from Holme Park, the 2nd XV also had success in Taplow against Phoenix.
It was also a day to celebrate three new partnerships. The first presentation was by the Wooden Spoon Society as they became a new partnership club.
The Society is a charity that raise money for disadvantaged children. Chris Henkey introduced Ollie Phillips, former professional rugby player and Captain of England 7’s. He is now an ambassador of the Wooden Spoon Society and presented Reading RFC with their partnership plaque.
The second presentation was by Howden Insurance Brokers, who are the main sponsors of the British and Irish Lions team touring Australia in 2025. They are honouring the Lion’s players who played at Community teams.
Reading had Clive Rees, who played in the Invincible Lions in South Africa in 1974 and played for one season at Holme Park. Club President, Yasmin Miller, was honoured to receive the plaque from Howden staff, Craig Warburton and Alex Onslow-Major, on behalf of Reading RFC and Clive Rees, as he is too unwell to attend.
Reading RFC also celebrated the beginning of a new partnership with Select Car Leasing, who now are the headline sponsors of the Sonning-based team as well as Reading Football Club.
