Former Reading goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola has been named the new goalkeeping coach at National League Southend United.
The former EFL stalwarts find themselves in the non-league pyramid after years of poor ownership under Ron Martin, but the Shrimps are rejuvenated under a new regime who have recently taken over.
Jaakkola was a Finland international and moved to Berkshire in 2016 after a successful spell in South Africa.
Predominantly a backup, the 37-year-old managed 30 appearances over three seasons but became popular at Bristol Rovers following his departure in 2019.
Hanging up his boots at the Memorial Stadium, Jaakkola spent two years as a coach with the Pirates before leaving earlier this year.
Now rocking up at Roots Hall, the former Kilmarnock shot stopper links up with former colleague and Southend legend Kevin Maher.
Jaakkola told the club website: “I’m very excited to be here and be part of the coaching staff. It’s a new start for me, I’ve known Kev for a few years since he was at Bristol Rovers.
“Usually goalie coaches move with the manager and rely on having that relationship, so it was vital that me and Kev knew each other.
“I’ve enjoyed being here so far. It takes time to get to know the goalies, but it feels like home already.”
