Bolton Wanderers hattrick hero Dion Charles has revealed a cheeky conversation with Reading goalkeeper David Button during Saturday's 5-2 defeat at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

The Trotters had failed to score at home until the weekend but found themselves 4-1 up at half-time, with Charles grabbing himself three.

With two penalties and a finish slotted through Button's legs, the former Accrington Stanley man has hit 20 goals for the last two successive League One seasons.

Ben Elliott and Sam Smith found the net for the Royals, but Ruben Selles' side were always playing catch-up after falling behind within 15 minutes.

Speaking to Bolton FM Sport after the match, Charles spoke of a cheeky exchange between himself and Royals stopper Button ahead of the second penalty on the stroke of half-time.

"I said to the keeper ‘Where do you want me to go?’ He said with the first one that I was going to go down the middle, so I said ‘Okay, I’ll go there.’ I said ‘I’ve gone down the middle, where you told me to, and I’ve put it through your legs- where do you want this one to go?’"

"It’s brilliant to get the hattrick and it was a brilliant performance from us so hopefully that kickstarts the season."

Reading also lost 5-2 at Bolton last season, on that occasion it was former Bristol Rovers striker Aaron Collins taking home the match ball.

On Saturday, Huddersfield Town visit Berkshire for the first third tier meeting between the sides for over 20 years.
