10-man Reading were on the end of a second-half Rotherham United comeback at the New York Stadium, losing 2-1 in South Yorkshire.
Lewis Wing opened the scoring for the Royals in the opening half hour but the Millers responded well after the break and scored twice in 10 minutes through Sam Nombe and Hakeem Odoffin to turn to tie around.
Ruben Selles' side were down to 10 men with 20 minutes remaining as Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan received two bookings.
A slow burner, there was little in the way of chances or quality in the first half as the two sides managed to cancel each other out. Rotherham, with two strong centre-forwards, bombarded the box and created more from chances from a numerical perspective, but neither keeper was tested too often.
Odoffin had the first chance of note, evading the Reading defence but heading wide at the far post. Growing into the game, especially on the counterattack, it was Reading who drew first blood somewhat against the run of play. Wing was upended on route into the box and earned a free kick in trademark territory.
As it by magic, the former Miller stepped up himself and curled a powerful effort past keeper Cameron Dawson and into the net. The Royals had their tails up and on the half-hour, mark could have doubled their advantage as Ben Elliott was fed with time and space on the edge of the box only to fire high and wide.
Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan saw a strong strike fly wide of the far post too as Reading had Rotherham rumbled. Jonson Clarke-Harris had the final effort of the half, heading powerfully on target and forcing David Button into a strong save to tip the ball over the bar.
It took just 10 minutes of the second half to turn the game on its head as the hosts returned from the break determined. Within four minutes, Nombe turned home a cross at the near post in which left Reading defenders looking less than switched on, while Odoffin’s floated cross shortly after dropped into the net as Reading defenders complained of a foul.
It could have been even worse moments later as Button was forced to throw himself across the goal line to tip Nombe’s long-distance strike around the post. It went from bad to worse with 20 minutes remaining as Ehibhatiomhan saw red. 16-year-old Garcia was on the receiving end of a strong tackle and engaged in some handbags with his opposite number. Ehibhatiomhan got involved and was swiftly given his second yellow card and sent for an early bath.
Substitute Jayden Wareham saw a shot deflect wide but in truth, 10-man Reading rarely looked like snatching a point as the tie wore on.
With wins over Huddersfield Town and Burton Albion, Reading's winless run ends at two heading into the international break.
The Royals travel to Cheltenham Town on Tuesday in the EFL Trophy.
