Reading have been placed under a transfer embargo due to the club's financial accounts remaining outstanding.

The Royals were no strangers to the EFL Embargo Reporting Service last season, repeatedly appearing predominantly due to late payments to HMRC.

In fact, the club were already under an embargo until 2025 as a punishment for last year's financial misdemeanours.

This limits the club from making any signing for a fee, including loan fees. However, the EFL have already restricted the club from making signings due to the uncertainty of the ownership situation, with winger Chem Campbell arriving on loan until January after discussions between the club and governing body when it looked like Rob Couhig would take over.

It is believed that once the accounts are published, the embargo drops and the Royals will not face an extension to the one which already runs to next year.

In a club statement, they confirmed: "The club can also confirm it has today been placed under a registration embargo by the EFL (English Football League). This embargo has been placed due to the late filing of financial accounts to Companies House.

"The Club is yet to file its accounts for the 2022-23 accounting period. We are working closely with our auditing partner to reconcile these accounts at the earliest opportunity – at which point the registration embargo will be lifted immediately."
