Reading legend Adam Le Fondre is aiming to emulate fellow fan favourite Jamie Cureton in playing past his 40th birthday.

Still playing for FC United of Manchester at 37, Le Fondre finished as top scorer for three successive seasons in Berkshire which included a Championship title win in 2012 and a Premier League campaign in 2013.

Winning Premier League Player of the Month for January 2013, he went on to enjoy a long EFL career with the likes of Bolton Wanderers and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

He is returning to the town for a Q&A session next month, with tickets selling fast.

Speaking to the Reading Chronicle about his current campaign in the Northern Premier Division, the Mancunian made it clear he had no signs of slowing down yet and would like to emulate Cureton, who played for Reading in the early 2000s.

"It's fun," he stated. "I had the chance to stay in full-time football, but I just felt my body was ready for a rest and a calm down. At the minute I’ve played more minutes than I thought- almost every minute of every game at the moment. It's nice just to play football and with one of my best mates as well. It always helps when you get to play with someone you've grown up with so that was one of the reasons, I wanted to do that. I always said to him that we have to play so it's been nice to be part of it and obviously scoring as well.

"I love the game, what it has given me and what I’ve given back so it’s important that you keep playing and I’m trying to do that. Providing my body lets me, I’ll keep playing. I think Curo [Jamie Cureton] played until he was 41 so would I love to get to that place? Potentially. As long as my body is fine, that would be fantastic."

However, despite not targeting retirement just yet, the former Sydney FC and Mumbai City favourite does have plenty of irons in the fire for when the time does come to hang up the boots.

"I’m not naive to think that I will last forever so I’ve got things in place to get ready for when I do transition- I’ve got a job ready to start and walk into my second career because I’ve still got 30-40 years left, or maybe more," he added.

"100 per cent I’m staying in football. Hopefully, I should be starting a role with The City Group as a scout for them in the emerging talent group so I’m really looking forward to that. I like the idea of Head of Recruitment, but you have to work your way up to that point- you can’t just start where you want to you have to earn your stripes and I’m more than prepared to do that. I’ve got time to do that and learn the job properly so when I do finish I can be ready to go."

The City Group own clubs around the country, including Manchester City and two of Le Fondre's previous clubs in Australia and India.
