Reading boss Ruben Selles admitted that he was left 'disappointed' that last Tuesday's EFL Trophy fixture with Cheltenham Town was postponed.

Supporters and staff alike had begun their journey to Gloucestershire, taking in multiple downpours in a week of poor weather, and the referee made the decision to cancel the match an hour and a half before the game had been due to kick-off.

A second game in the Royals' EFL Trophy campaign, West Ham United were dispatched 3-1 in the first fixture last month.

Often used for squad rotation, despite an international break meaning Reading are without a fixture for over 10 days, Selles was hoping to see youngster players break through with positive experiences in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.

Speaking to BBC Radio Berkshire, Selles admitted he would have liked the fixture to have gone ahead to keep giving minutes to young players.

"We were ready," he told Ady Williams at an event organised by the Former Players' Association. "We completely changed the line-up and have some younger players growing with us and those games make a platform for them to do it, as has happened with Andre Garcia and will need to happen with some others. For players like Harlee Dean, it is very important to play those 90 minutes so I’m a little bit disappointed they didn’t get the game but hopefully, they can get it in the future."

Tuesday, November 5 has been put aside for the rescheduled match.
