It has been quite a scary time to be a Reading supporter in recent years, with the very future of the club seemingly only ever at risk with each passing month.

However, with today being a day full of frights and sweet delights, lets take a cheerier look down memory lane at some ghosts of Royals past and some competitive action which fell on All Hallows Eve.

Reading 3-1 Nottingham Forest: October 31 2017

After missing out on promotion to the Premier League on penalties in May 2017, many had hoped for a better reaction to the heartache than an eventual 21st-place finish in 2017/18, with Jaap Stam not seeing out the whole campaign.

Beating Aston Villa in August, a convincing win over Nottingham Forest on Halloween was only the club's second home win of the season at that point and a first win in eight matches in total.

A John Swift brace and Sone Aluko strike had Reading cruising and Ben Osborn's late consolation did little to dampen spirits.

Current Reading forward Sam Smith started on that day.

Beating East Midlands rivals Derby County a week later, Stam would win just three more matches and was replaced by Paul Clement in March.

Reading 1-1 Brighton and Hove Albion: October 31 2015

Matej Vydra scored his first Reading goal on Halloween nine years ago as Reading took a point off league leaders Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Royals were well-worthy of the draw in front of over 21,000 supporters at the Madejski Stadium, despite falling behind to Jamie Murphy's opener shortly after half-time.

Vydra- who had hit 16 goals for Watford in 2014/15, managed just three Championship goals during a disappointing and costly loan spell.

Coventry City 1-3 Reading: October 31 2009

Reading ended a four-game losing streak with a strong victory over Coventry City 15 years ago.

Grzegorz Rasiak hit a brace for Brendan Rodgers' side and Jobi McAnuff found the net to move the Royals out of the relegation zone.

Winning just twice more, Celtic chief Rodgers was replaced by Brian McDermott in December and the rest, as they say, is history.

Wycombe Wanderers 2-3 Reading: October 31 1998

Tommy Burns' extended their unbeaten run to six with a hard-fought win over near-neighbours Wycombe Wanderers.

Off the back of a statement victory at Maine Road over giants Manchester City, the Royals were upwardly mobile after a sticky start back in the third tier.

Grant Brebner had a brace inside 10 minutes and Martin Williams added a third with 10 minutes remaining in front of nearly 7,000 supporters at Adam's Park.

Reading would finish their first season at the Madejski Stadium in 11th, including a run of seven defeats in the final nine fixtures.

Reading 3-0 Plymouth Argyle: October 31 1992

A streaky Royals side would go on to finish eighth in the third tier under player-manager Mark McGhee- a disappointing Christmas period putting to bed any hopes of a late promotion charge.

It proved a scary afternoon for the Pilgrims at Elm Park in 1992 as Tom Jones, Jimmy Quinn and Keith McPherson all found the net.

The following season Reading would lift the title and return to the second tier, with Plymouth sitting in third.
