Two-time Championship winner, Brynjar Gunnarsson, is among the 'leading contenders' to take over at League One rivals Burton Albion, according to reports.

The 49-year-old midfielder arrived in Berkshire from Watford in 2005 and remained with the club until 2012, lifting the Championship in 2006 and 2013 while racking up over 160 appearances.

He is the only player to have been a part of both title winning teams, however he only made five appearances in 2011/12 as his role had become more bit-part.

Gunnarsson was also a regular at Stoke City and made appearances for Nottingham Forest in a 14-year association with English football.

Retiring shortly after departing Reading, the Icelandic international has had two coaching roles in Iceland and Sweden, last in charge of Orgryte in 2022, but is reportedly among the front-runners at the Pirelli Stadium after Mark Robinson's sacking.

The Brewers are sat rock-bottom of League One and are under new Scandinavian ownership.

According to BBC Radio Derby, 'a source his given us a name about a front-runner for the Burton job this evening, Icelandic international Gunnarsson- one of the leading contenders to become the new Brewers manager.'

Burton currently sit seven points adrift of safety in League One, losing 3-1 at Reading in October.
