Reading FC appears to have made an ill-judged attempt to lighten the mood among fans with a video that remixes King Richard III with Sir John Madejski - but fans say the lack of 'meaningful' communication is hurting the club when it comes to game attendance.
Last night, the Royal's Twitter account posted a video of a news clip discussing the digital re-creation of King Richard III's voice, part of a new display at York Theatre Royal.
The digital avatar of the medieval king is supposed to say 'the clarity and charity of the sun's light is so great' - but the Reading FC tweet dubbed it with the voice of former owner Sir John Madejski, heard celebrating in the Purple Turtle bar in town.
Reading FC included the caption: "Isn't modern technology fantastic."
'Weirdest tweet of the season', one Royals' fan commented online, echoing similar sentiments from other fans, before the tweet was swiftly deleted.
The suspected attempt at levity does not appear to have lifted the spirits of many Royals supporters, with one group calling for a 'meaningful' update on the sale of the club.
Reading FC was plunged into crisis over the financial issues of owner Dai Yongge, who announced he was looking to sell the club more than a year ago.
Earlier this month, The Reading Chronicle revealed that the Chinese businessman has faced a string of court cases linked to hundreds of millions in unpaid loans in China - but the club declined to comment on the matter, the owner's whereabouts, or the sale of the football club.
Now fan group Sell Before We Dai says the lack of communication from the club is hitting attendance figures at matches.
A poll of 1,200 Reading FC fans shows that the lack of updates has led to them missing matches.
A spokesperson from Sell Before We Dai said: "The push for better comms during this never-ending saga goes on.
"A lot of fans continue to be worried about the future of their football club.
"The lack of information provided from the club will create a vacuum for rumours and reduce attendances."
