Confusion filled the air ahead of extra time in Reading's 5-3 win over non-league Harborough Town as star striker Sam Smith was ready to enter the action, only to be told he had to sit back down for the 30 minutes.

The Royals needed an extra half hour to overcome the eighth tier Bees in the FA Cup second round, falling down to 10 men and conceding an equaliser five minutes from time in what was an all-time FA Cup classic.

It was substitute Chem Campbell who won the tie, scoring twice in two minutes to take the tie away from Harborough and securing passage into the third round.

However, Smith did not get the chance to be the match winner due to a 'mistake.'

Having used all five of their changes, both benches were under the impression that a sixth change was permitted during the extra period.

Ultimately, the rules state that this is no longer the case and that clubs get an extra 'opportunity' to make changes, but not an additional change itself.

Teams are permitted three breaks in play, aside from natural pauses at half-time and between full-time and extra-time, to make substitutions.

Speaking after the match, Selles said he will 'seek clarification' from the authorities to avoid making a similar mistake in the future.

"We will get clarification because we were told you can make an extra substitution if you go to extra time. Their manager was also on the same page because that had been the rule. The referee said it changed so I need to check a paragraph.

"If it should be like that then it was our mistake, but we will ask for clarification."

Both teams had used all five of their permitted changes within the 90 minutes, with 17-year-old Andre Garcia limping for the final 20 minutes with a knock.
